Welcome to my blog! I’m Georgie, head to About Me if you want to find out more, head to Blog if you want to see my posts.
I hope you find my musings on farming life mildly interesting, entertaining and funny (when I mean to be!). Enjoy!
First things first then! I’m Georgie, I’m 21, I’m currently studying Agriculture at Harper Adams, and have a small flock of 15 breeding ewes, including 4 Pedigree Jacobs. A lot of people have asked me why I chose to study Agriculture, not always in a positive manner. I’m not from a farming family, and my A Levels definitely wouldn’t suggest an interest in Agriculture; English Literature, Classical Civilisation and Drama. However, despite initial impressions, I have been involved with farming, in particular sheep work, since the age of 13. My first lambing season involved feeding cade lambs and getting involved as much as I could. I’ve now completed 3 full lambing seasons. The most recent being with my current part-time employer. In the years between my first lambing season at 13, and my most recent aged 19, I have completed GCSE’s, A Levels, started University, worked full time on the same farm for 2 consecutive summers, and started my own flock of sheep.
Buying my flock of sheep was my most significant personal achievement to date. I spent months researching breeds, logistics and legislation, and after receiving payment for my work experience with The Shooting Times in London, I bought my first 8 ewes from the farmer who would then offer me a job. That was in 2014, and 3 years later I now have my small flock. I bought my sheep before starting my final year of A Levels (a questionable decision!), but having them helped to confirm in my own mind that I wanted to pursue a career in Agriculture. In 2014, I applied to one University, to study one course, BSc (Hons) in Agriculture at Harper Adams. It was clear to me that Harper was the place I wanted to be. The course, the campus, the people. I had never experienced anything like it, and it seemed like the perfect place to further my knowledge of all things farming. Getting a degree was extremely important to me, because despite my passion for livestock and practical farming, I also enjoy writing (hence the blog!). From a very young age I have wanted to be a journalist, and combining my love for farming with my love for writing is what I want to do as a career.
So, I hope you enjoy reading my blog, I’m hoping it will be a mix of personal thoughts and topical Agriculture-related pieces. We shall see.
